The Mental Edge: Why Your Mindset Matters in Sport

If you’d asked me years ago what separates good athletes from great ones, I would’ve said things like talent, hard work, or maybe even luck. But the more time I’ve spent in sports, both as a coach and as someone constantly pushing my own limits, the more I’ve realised: your mindset is everything.


I’ve played sports all my life, from county-level competition as a kid to my current training with Deal Tri Club (alongside my weekly badminton games and the occasional trip to the driving range!). But as much as I love sport, I’ve also struggled with it, mainly through injuries. Running is my thing, but I have a habit of overdoing it, pushing too hard, and ending up with an injury. It was actually during an injury that I really started diving into sport psychology, even focusing my master’s dissertation on how injuries affect psychological well-being.


That’s what inspired me to start this journey, first through self-improvement books, then a master’s, and now through my SEPAR training. My goal? To help athletes not just perform better but feel better too.


Why Mental Performance Matters

Every athlete faces pressure, doubt, or setbacks at some point. Some rise to the occasion, while others struggle. We’ve all seen those players who thrive under pressure, last-minute winners, clutch performances, athletes who just seem mentally unshakable.

That’s not an accident. It’s trainable.


Even the best in the world, players I watch week in, week out with Arsenal, talk about the importance of mindset. Top footballers don’t just train their bodies; they train their minds to stay focused, resilient, and confident in the toughest moments.


A Simple Mental Training Exercise

Here’s something that’s helped me, especially when I’m coming back from injury: visualisation.


  1. Find a quiet space and close your eyes.

  2. Picture yourself performing your sport at your absolute best, running smoothly, striking the ball perfectly, moving freely.

  3. Engage all your senses, what do you see, hear, and feel?

  4. Repeat this daily, even if you’re injured or struggling.


Research shows that even mentally rehearsing movement can help maintain confidence and improve recovery. It’s a small habit, but one that can make a huge difference.


Final Thoughts

Sport is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. I’ve learned that the hard way through my own setbacks, but it’s also what’s driven me to study sport psychology and help others through the challenges that come with competition.

i had some mental challenges as footballer in the youth days as a 15/16 year old , i played in the team who was had a lot of problems to train properly in the condition we had , so a lot of players chose to quit , we had to go to a match with 10/11/12 players only , you know how hard it is to play 90 min , we were low rank team , i am some how find true motivation to give me maximum , learn from this experince of every game /sport battle , make my duty for team the best i could . i finish the year with the team , and got a u17…
